How to organize yourself is just the same as in anything else, taking the first step is always the hardest! Choose just one area to work on so that you can accomplish it and are not overwhelmed. Start to organize yourself with maybe a drawer, a cabinet or a small closet. Learning to organize yourself and getting it done will feel great! Set a date and time to do it and write it on your calendar! Here comes the fun part. Think how great it’s going to be once it’s done and come up with your reward when it’s completed!

Use these guidelines that are very useful when de-cluttering and organizing, especially if you are going to organize yourself. They are helpful when you cannot decide what to do with something. Hold up your hand and count with your fingers, asking yourself, "Do I really love this?" and "Do I really need this?"

Put on your "get it done" attitude and favorite music.

  • Get black trash bags for trash and white trash bags for donations. That way you never have to question what's in the black bag - it's always trash.
  • Pull everything out of the area and into pile into 4 sections: trash, donation, goes elsewhere, and stays.
  • Clean the area.
  • The "goes elsewhere" pile could be items that go in a different room, returned to the original owner, returned to the store, etc.
  • Once it is all pulled out and separated, go ahead and put the trash where it belongs and take the donation pile straight to the car.
  • Take each item that belongs elsewhere and go put it in its proper place.
  • Now, it’s time to put back the items that stay there. Be sure to group similar items together and put items that are used more frequently easiest to get to.

Stand back and revel in the beauty and relaxation of having it all organized! Remember to claim your reward and mark the job off your "To Do" list!
